I was in an elementary school classroom in St. Louis Park today photographing for the Givens Foundation for African American Literature, a great organization. Givens offers school residencies with local literary artists. Here is storyteller Nothando Zulu.

May 18. Community sing in Powerhorn Park. Lovely evening to sit in the park and sing! They talked a bit about the history of community sings in Minneapolis. From the around the 1920 to the mid-1950s thousands of people would gather in the parks to sing. I loved the stories about the competitions between Minneapolis parks. I think the largest singing crowd was 35,000! (Not sure if I heard that right.)
